Yule Logs - A Christmas Tradition



A Yule log For Christmas is a large is a special log,  burned in the open fire as a part of traditional Christmas celebrations in several European countries and cultures.

A clergy man Robert Herrick makes a written reference to a Christmas Log as a tradition in around the 1620-1630’s. The tradition that the log was presented to the home/farmhouse by a group of males who were rewarded with beer! He goes on to write  that a piece of the log from the previous years celebrations would be used to light the fire. Its meaning in the tradition was to bring prosperity, and to ward off evil. By keeping a remnant all year round it would keep protection of the dwelling.
In traditional  Christmas pictures with reference to English folklore, Father Christmas can often be scene depicted carrying a Yule Log.
